Super Mario World Hacking Wiki

Kernigh October 20, 2009 User blog:Kernigh

http://smwhacking.wikia.com is the address of the "SMW Hacking Wiki", a recent attempt to create an entire wiki about hacking Super Mario World.

At the moment, the wiki contains practically no information about hacking SMW. However, there are a few pages, which might eventually contain information.

This is not the first attempt to create such a wiki. I know that SMWcentral (the web site with the SMW hack archive) previously hosted "SMWiki", a wiki about hacking SMW. However, SMWcentral chose to remove SMWiki from the internet. Now, we only have the SMWiki Backup, a downloadable backup copy of old SMWiki. This backup copy is not a place to edit wiki pages.

Because old SMWiki never used a free license, we are not free to copy anything from old SMWiki to new SMW Hacking Wiki, or to edit the copy. Without any free license, we have no chance to continue old SMWiki. We always have the chance to start new wiki about the same subject. The new wiki can use a free license.

The free license there at new SMW Hacking Wiki, here at ROM Hack City and around most of Wikia is the Creative Commons BY-SA license mentioned at Wikia:Licensing. We can use this free license to copy stuff between ROM Hack City and new SMW Hacking Wiki (though we must credit the source of the copy). If new SMW Hacking Wiki would disappear from the internet, then we can take a backup copy and use the free license to continue the wiki.

Like this ROM Hack City, that new SMW Hacking Wiki is a Wikia. I expect that new SMW Hacking Wiki will remain online. Some Wikia have no editors for many months, but Wikia continues to host them, because that is the best way to attract editors, and editors write good wiki pages, and good wiki pages attract readers. I started to edit Wikia almost four years ago, at 18 February 2005, before the name changed from Wikicities to Wikia. (ROM Hack City takes the "City" name from Wikicities.) During my first visit to Wikihack, the NetHack wiki, I primarily saw the lists of red links to missing pages. Today, Wikihack has more than one thousand pages, because so many editors added so much stuff.

Users created ROM Hack City during May 2005. Special:WikiaStats shows the history of edits to ROM Hack City. The only months with more than five edits to ROM Hack City are May 2005, September 2005, December 2006, January 2008, June 2008, November 2008, June 2009, July 2009, August 2009 and September 2009. ROM Hack City had almost no edits for many months. If the host had removed ROM Hack City before June 2009 (like how SMWcentral removed old SMWiki), then I would never have edited ROM Hack City. I began to edit ROM Hack City during June 2009, and I have provided four continuous months of edits.

I can hope that new SMW Hacking Wiki will stay at Wikia and eventually gain some editors.

I prefer to keep my ROM-hacking activity at one wiki. If I will write wiki pages about Super Mario World, then I expect to post them here to ROM Hack City. So I might never contribute anything to new SMW Hacking Wiki. I am not sure. I might want to contribute one page, to help start that wiki.
